Biography

Minna Långström is a Helsinki-based filmmaker working across fiction, documentary, and expanded cinema. Her films are driven by character and atmosphere, with a sustained interest in how people navigate intimate, social, or mediated systems of knowledge and assumption.

Working as both writer and director, she often uses literary and cinematic references as structural elements, letting a familiar text, image, or idea carry dramatic weight. Science fiction is a recurring strand -sometimes a clear genre frame, sometimes speculative notes threaded into nonfiction. Her feature screenplay was selected for the eQuinoxe International Screenwriters’ Workshop (Germany), and a three-year Villa Snäcksund residency provided the time and space for sustained work on new long-form screen projects.

Her one-hour documentary The Other Side of Mars (napafilms, 2019), filmed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, follows Mars rover operations as a lens on scientific imaging and interpretation. The film premiered at DocPoint and received the “A Testimony on Knowledge” prize at Jihlava IDFF, among other awards.

Her immersive film installations have been exhibited at venues including Frankfurter Kunstverein, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Kunstfort Vijfhuizen, and Fotografiska Shanghai, and her work is included in the collection of the Finnish National Gallery.

In addition, she founded a production company active from 2002–2008, and served as Assistant Professor of Moving Image at the University of the Arts Helsinki from 2008–2012.
