Biography

Based in Helsinki, Finland Minna Långström’s practice spans from 3D animation and short film to participatory film installation and full length documentary film.

Her work tends to be well researched, often engaging collaborators from different disciplines. Phenomenological inquiry into visual technologies is a special subject of interest in her artistic universe as she often combines dreamlike aesthetics and spatial thinking with scientific inquiry. Several of her works critique technologically mediated narratives of political histories and their cinematic influences on the current. She seeks to bring to the surface implicit cultural codes that constitute the ambivalent social dimension of the contemporary world. In both her installations and films the intuitive, active experience  of the viewer is a central aspect.

Minna Långström’s films have been screened at several international film festivals such as Bergen IFF, Jihlava IDFF, DocPoint, Tampere Film Festival and on Finnish public television YLE. Her most recent film The Other Side of Mars, produced by Liisa Karpo, napafilms, won the Testimony on Knowledge – award at the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, 2019. Her installation work has been exhibited at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Frankfurter Kunstverein and Nassauisher Kunstverein as well as in galleries such as Sinne, Elverket, and MUU gallery in Finland, and Interaccess Gallery in Toronto, Kunsthalle Lophem in Belgium, and Kunstfort Vijhusen in The Netherlands. She is a grantee of the William Thuring award by the Finnish Art Society, 2017.

Minna Långström holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, including exchange studies at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. In 2003 she founded the Virta Productions company producing films and film installations for several filmmakers. She worked for the Lens Politica Film Festival in Helsinki 2006 – 2009 and was an assistant professor in Moving Image at the Academy of Fine Art in Helsinki 2008-2012. 2014-2016 she was chairman of the Bioart Society board. She has been artist-in-residence at London Space Studios, IASPIS (Nifca), Stockholm and FACT, Liverpool.
